Refuse to Install Dangerous Tires

Although automotive technology is evolving rapidly, it influences consumer perception and can sometimes make them more negligent.

It’s impressive to see the number of articles about tires addressing technology, advice, brands, and safety innovations. What about the potential development of the Goodyear SightLine smart tire, for example.

However, despite these technological and economic advances, growing tension persists regarding tire wear, both for consumers and garage mechanics.

TPMS sensors monitor pressure, overheating in some cases, and tire slippage through the anti-lock braking system, but not wear.

The Choice to Choose Wisely

Winter and summer, these technologies are practical, but tire wear remains a major problem. An article in Le Devoir, published and updated on December 10, 2024, states that poor tires have cost the lives of 28 Quebecers since 2021. “The choice to drive in certain conditions remains an individual choice, but this choice can have serious consequences.” (https://www.ledevoir.com/societe/825597/mauvais-pneus-ont-coute-vie-28-quebecois-depuis-2021)

Keeping your distance, slowing down when weather conditions deteriorate, or moderating braking to anticipate the ESP stability light coming on is smart, forward-thinking, and saves lives.

Some garage mechanics have inquired about the legality of tire installation. Without wordplay, it’s a slippery terrain that requires efforts to protect mechanics in many cases. The only legal information available on platforms deals with the consequences and responsibility of mechanics. For consumers, prevention often boils down to the deadlines imposed by the SAAQ for changing tires in preparation for the cold season or the return of good weather.

Even if a customer claims to take full responsibility and forces you to install non-compliant tires, you will be held responsible for any damages that may result from this installation and possibly prosecuted for criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death, if applicable. The same applies to certain urgent repairs.

Let the Customer Know

Take note: you have an obligation to inform consumers about the risks associated with using worn or unsuitable tires to ensure that the service provided does not endanger their safety and that of others.

Should I inform them? Install anyway? Write it on the invoice? The customer isn’t happy? I lose a client? No matter, a customer who doesn’t want to hear the voice of reason and who endangers their safety, that of their loved ones, and all other road users does not deserve your services. Indicate on the invoice they sign that they insist on driving on tires that you consider unfit. You’ll see that in many cases, simply explaining to the customer the reason for this approach will make them take responsibility and change their mind.

Consumers have their eyes on the road, but you are perfectly qualified and informed to communicate to your customers the importance of driving on tires in good condition. Let’s not stretch the rubber, please.
