The publication of the Clutch Certified Reliability Report is challenging preconceived notions about what guarantees a used vehicle’s reliability. Data collected by the online retailer shows that brand and country of origin—rather than prestige, price, and mileage—are the best indicators. Right out of the gate, it is clear that Japanese brands dominate the rankings. Once they cross the 100,000 km mark, American vehicles make a poor showing, with a failure rate of over 60% during inspections carried out by Clutch. For their part, Korean and German models fail 24% and 39% more often, respectively, than those from the Land of the Rising Sun. For Dan Park, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, the takeaway is clear: “A high price tag does not guarantee a premium ownership experience. Engineering origin remains a key indicator of long-term quality, and Japanese-designed brands continue to offer durable vehicles in both the luxury and affordable segments.”

Lexus, Subaru, Acura, Toyota, and Honda sweep the top five spots. Along with Mazda, ranked 7th, these six brands are among the seven manufacturers that scored above 9.0 (out of a total of 10 points). Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW settle for scores of 7.58, 7.27, and 6.63, respectively. As for RAM, it brings up the rear with a score of 6.21.

The German caveat

Although they are “recognized for their powertrains and fit and finish,” premium German brands see their performance weighed down primarily by high maintenance costs. “Between high-end parts and specialized labor, owning a luxury vehicle remains expensive to maintain, and when maintenance is neglected, depreciation accelerates,” the report states.

The report also highlights the prominent role that corrosion plays within the Quebec fleet. As the leading cause of inspection failure (48.5%), rust heavily tarnishes the track records of RAM (64%), Dodge (62%), and Chevrolet and Subaru (both at 56%). In the electric vehicle landscape, Tesla racks up twice as many collision and body-related issues (57%) compared to other electron-powered rides. This weakness, which stems from a manufacturing issue specific to the automaker, drags down the overall rating for electric vehicles, as the brand accounts for 78% of Clutch’s EV acquisitions. However, the report specifies that “other EVs rank comparably to gas and hybrid models,” adding in passing that hybrids boast a higher reliability index than those equipped with an internal combustion engine when they have between 7 and 10 years of service. Following rust, the main factors are engine failures (40.8%), powertrain issues (29.7%), and fluid leaks (16.5%).

In conclusion, the Clutch report reiterates that when it comes to pre-owned vehicles, a brand’s reputation and engineering quality often carry more weight than the prestige of the badge on the hood or the mileage on the odometer. The findings—based on data from more than 100,000 inspections performed by Clutch since its founding in 2016—offer a fresh perspective on the factors driving long-term reliability.
