Each year, paint manufacturers release a report reflecting consumer preferences for vehicle colours. Here’s an overview of the most popular shades in 2024.
Global Overview
For several years now, white has topped global rankings, and 2024 is no exception.
Last year, 31% of all vehicles were white (solid and tri-coat). Grey ranked second at 23%, followed by black at 21% (solid and effect). Once dominant, silver grey now sits in fourth place with 9%. Blue follows at 6%, red at 4%, brown or beige at 3%, green at 2%, and yellow/gold and other colours at less than 1%.
The Americas
Across the Americas, colour preferences follow a similar trend. White leads with an average of 35%, followed by grey (23%) and black (16%). In North America, blue overtakes silver grey at 9% compared with 5% in South America. Conversely, silver grey surpasses blue in South America at 13% versus 8%. Red averages 5%, while other colours each account for less than 4%.
Europe
In Europe, white is slightly less popular at 25%, followed by grey at 24% and black at 23%, with a clear preference for metallic finishes (3% solid and 20% effect). Silver grey and blue are tied at 9%, while red and brown/beige each represent 3%. The remaining colours make up the rest.
Asia
India: White dominates with 35%, including 26% solid whites. Silver grey follows at 27%, and grey ranks third at 16%. Red and brown/beige are tied at 6%, while black comes in sixth at 4%, followed by other colours.
South Korea: White also leads at 33%, followed by grey (26%) and black (14%, all effect finishes). Blue is popular at 10%, followed by red at 5%. Interestingly, silver grey represents only 3%. The rest fall under minor categories.
Japan: White dominates again with 38%, with a preference for pearl finishes (29%). Black follows at 18%, grey at 11%, silver grey and blue tied at 7%, then yellow/gold (6%) and green (4%).
China: Here, black leads with 30%. White follows at 29%, and grey at 22%. Brown/beige holds 5%, silver grey and blue are tied at 4%, followed by the other colours.
Summary
Data shows that 72% of the vehicles produced in 2024 for North America were achromatic (white, grey, black). Looking at Canada’s vehicle population, the numbers speak for themselves.
