Atrezzo SVA2 UHP and Terramax AT2 get put through their paces.
Will it resonate with my customers? A simple question, but one that many tire retailers have no doubt asked themselves over the years. Having the right product that’s competitively priced can be a big win for the shop and its customers and we’ve seen some tire brands zoom in popularity since they’re able to fill that niche in the market.
A good example is Sailun. Over the last decade the brand’s portfolio has exploded in North America and so have its sales. A key factor in that success has been a relentless emphasis on R&D, engineering and creating tires that are designed specifically for markets in which Sailun operates, including right here in North America.
Test time
Recently, Autosphere was given the opportunity to try out two it’s latest offerings to see how they stack up, as well as revisit a popular product that’s established itself as a leading player in the on/off-road market.
Testing tires successfully requires having access to the right surfaces, operating environment, instruction and vehicles.
And we found ourselves at Burt Brothers Motorpark in Grantsville, just outside Toole, Utah, not far from Salt Lake City. Here, we were given the opportunity to put these new products through their paces as part of Sailun’s Traction Tour event.
Atrezzo SVA2
First up was Sailun’s newest all-season Ultra-High-Performance Tire, the Atrezzo SVA2. Designed to blend optimal performance and durability, the Atrezzo features a modern tread design that incorporates an optimized void arrangement. In other words, a greater number of groove edges contained within the tread, which helps dissipate moisture to enhance traction on wet and slippery surfaces. In addition, the contact patch was designed to evenly distribute ground pressure to optimize grip and control, while additional tread blocks help quell road noise and improve surface impact absorption—translation—a quieter and smoother ride than some traditional UHP tires.
It all sounded great on paper, but to find out how it fairs under test conditions, we strapped ourselves into a 2025 Ford Mustang GT, donned our helmet and hit the road course at Burt Brothers. In a powerful and torquey rear-wheel drive car like the Mustang, traction is everything and even putting the car through its paces, and throttle steering the corners of the track, the Atrezzo SVA2 demonstrated good traction and handling, far more in fact than its comfortable ride would suggest. Although we didn’t get a chance to test in wet conditions, as we accumulated more laps, the tires felt confident, both in fast corners and through slower turns. Getting on the power, then braking quickly and turning inspired confidence lap after lap, and we felt that this new UHP offering, which comes in V, W and Y speed ratings, can hold its own against some esteemed and significantly pricier competitors. Offered in many popular 16 through 18-inch wheel diameters, we feel that for the UHP/All-Season segment, Sailun definitely has a strong entry-one that blends solid high performance with good value for money.
Terramax AT2
Our next tire couldn’t be more different. The Sailun Terramax AT2 is the brand’s newest entry into the on-off road segment. Designed and engineered for pickup trucks and SUVs, it sports an aggressive, open shoulder tread design with protective sidewall biters that offer extra traction, as well as extend tire life. The centre rib design is also engineered to enhance stability and ride control, while the tire’s 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) certification provides peace of mind for customers, knowing that this tire will perform well, even in severe snow conditions.
A whole host of different sizes and configurations are available, from 235/75R15, up to 35×12.5020LT for serious off-road work, so there’s essentially something for everyone, for the family that takes their kids to school during the week and may venture onto gravel trails on weekends, to serious off-roaders who like to spend as much time out in the boonies, or Overland their customized 4×4 rigs.
Most sales however are likely to fall somewhere in the middle, for size applications such as LT265/70R17 or 18. Even then, this tire’s performance both on and off-road is impressive. We climbed into a Ram 1500 half ton pickup and hit an off-road course with a combination of sand, gravel, rocks and wet mud, not to mention longitudinal and transverse inclines. While a good 4×4 system and a torquey engine are major benefits when venturing properly off-road, ultimately it is the tires that really get you through. From our experience driving on the Terramax AT2, it was clearly evident that this tire, does a good job in balancing off-road prowess with on-road refinement. It’s got the traction to get you through, even on challenging terrain like sand and through deep, muddy ruts. Apply a decent amount of throttle and watch the tires just power the truck through the soft sand and boggy mud. Even on transverse terrain where you’re having to contend with a good amount of lean, the AT2 holds its own and you feel confident in steering the truck along with little in the way of slipping and sliding. Even under aggressive braking, and on loose gravel or sand, the tires tend to minimize sliding, even in a 4,780 lb (2168 kg) pickup when hitting the anchors hard from 40 mph (64 km/h). This is one tire that gets the job done, and for around 80% of customers that come through most tire retailers looking for a capable on/off road tire, the AT2 is likely right up their alley. This product is well positioned in the marketplace, and looks like it will become a popular offering across Canada and the U.S.
Terramax RT
We originally tested this tire on a grueling day of off-roading in Nevada’s Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, as well as extensive evaluation on smooth suburban tarmac, city streets and freeways. It’s an aggressive 3PMS certified tire that was designed to blend serious off-road prowess with good ride quality and decent road manners, including lower noise levels than those typically found on these kinds of tires. We were impressed back in 2023 and no less so when we saddled up in a Jeep Rubicon and took to some fairly demanding off-road terrain, which included steep grades littered with rocks and gravel. The Terramax RT really excels off-road when combined with lifted Jeeps, SUVs or pickups, but it will still perform well on your daily driver 4×4, being civil enough to handle the daily commute, while getting you places you think you might not be able to go when out in the sticks. A particularly impressive aspect of this tire is the amount of traction it provides on steep inclines, not to mention confidence-inspiring stability, particularly when you’re dealing with not only up and down grades, but transverse trails too. Simply point, gently apply the throttle, steer straight and off you go. Since launch, the Terramax RT has become a mainstay and highly popular offering in the on/off road segment, particularly for those wanting a more serious tire. It complements the new Terramax AT2 nicely, giving dealers an attractive offering that blends strong performance and overall value.
