Although brand new, thousands of vehicles present safety risks.
Computers and robotics are not “yet” synonymous with perfection, as evidenced by the 178 recalls issued by Transport Canada in the last 10 months, 52 of which involved the 2023 models.
Between June 2022 and May 1st 2023, about twenty manufacturers, in nearly twenty aspects, designated 80 models with dangerous problems at various levels.
The most serious relate to fire hazards, over 47,000; power loss, 25,000; and glare, some 85,600, plus 33,000 vehicles with non-compliant tail lights.
In these batches, 20,000 Bolt EVs have been recalled due to the risk of carpet fires during an impact.
Rogue et Qashqai
Of the one million vehicles that have been recalled, an astonishing one-third have a construction or design defect that dates back several years, even almost 20 years!
One example is the recall of more than 95,000 Rogue and Qashqai S models due to hazards caused by inadvertent unlocking of the folding ignition key.
Nissan said that on these 2014 to 2022 models it could result in loss of engine power, loss of power steering and braking, and non-deployment of airbags.
This recall is in addition to some 7,300 of its Titans and Frontiers whose parking pawl may not engage when the lever is in position P, causing the vehicle to move.
Technology involved
The fact remains that technology has a lot to do with these recalls, such as the sudden loss of power caused by resetting the high-voltage battery control unit of electric vehicles.
Or this programming error in the comfort module that, in the GM family, causes glare because the daytime running lights do not turn off when the headlights are turned on.
In this case, the recalled units are Buick Envision, Cadillac CT4, CT5, Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, as well as GMC Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL pickups.
All recalls since 1970
The importance of the Transport Canada Recall Database, which is available to all, is undeniable. It can be accessed through the recalls site, Alexa or an RSS content source.
The 40,000 still-valid notices on the site since 1970, from manufacturers of road vehicles, snowmobiles and tires, systematically indicate the corrective measures applied free of charge by their dealers.
Since recalls only affect a certain number of models, it is usually sufficient to check by entering the vehicle identification number of any model and year on the manufacturer’s website.
Away from the dealers
Even if it is up to the dealers to make the necessary corrections, garages can solve many problems, especially in remote areas, but be sure to have the agreement of the customer and the manufacturer.
Note: The recall in early March of 3,470 Tesla Model Ys due to loose bolts holding the backrests together is only for the U.S. market.
