2023 EVs: Even More All-Electric

This year, the number of 100% electric models offered on the market actually exceeds the number of hybrids.

As usual, it was in February that Natural Resources Canada’s Consumers’ Guide lifted the veil on what characterizes these new models.

This time it shows that 20 manufacturers offer a total of 33 base hybrids, 27 plug-in hybrids and 100 fully electric vehicles.

Since 2021, electric vehicles offerings have jumped dramatically, from about 30 to 81 before increasing this year by 25%.

Exclusive report

Surprisingly, however, the number of non-plug-in hybrids increased slightly, while the number of plug-in hybrids dropped from 40 to 27.

This is obviously good news for those who may not have access to a home charging station, fear charging failures of fully electric vehicles or prefer not to worry about it.

Comparative data on the number of models

Distance gains

Autonomy being the big question, we notice that the 2023 models make on average 50 kilometers more than in 2019: a minimum addition of 70 and maximum of 200 kilometers.

In fact, the average mileage has increased from 380 to 430, the minimum distance is no longer 92 but 161 kilometers, while the maximum is 783 kilometers instead of 595… if you pay for it.

On the other hand, considering that the capacity of the batteries has been increased accordingly, the fastest charging time at a 240 volt 30A outlet has increased by one hour, and the slowest, by 2 hours.

The most energy-efficient

Finally, although Natural Resources Canada does not list the most energy-efficient electric vehicles in the “Fuel Consumption Guide”, it does list them.

The group includes 22 models divided among the following brands–BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Lexus, Lucid, Rivian, Tesla, Toyota and Volvo–and by type.

In addition to this list of the most fuel-efficient electrics, there are tables showing hybrid, plug-in hybrid and 100% electric vehicles by brand, as well as their consumption, range and recharging time (R/t) at a 240-volt, 30-amp station.
