Autosphere is always on the lookout for an automotive service professional who is at the top of their profession and Ryan Babin at Babin’s Auto Repair was suggested to us. We contacted Ryan and asked some questions. What follows is his story.

First Autosphere wanted to know how Babin Auto Repair came to be.

Babin’s Auto Repair was founded in 2020 during one of the most uncertain times in modern history—the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was a bold move to take over and rebrand a business in such challenging circumstances, the shop was built on a solid foundation. Formerly known as Ballard’s Automotive, the business had proudly served the community for over 35 years.

Autosphere asked if his repair shop business had changed much over the years.

What began as a modest three-bay facility has evolved steadily over the past five years. In August 2024, we expanded our original footprint, doubling in size to a 10-bay operation. Today, Babin’s Auto Repair operates out of a 6,800 sq. ft. facility staffed by seven full-time professionals. And we’re not stopping there—we’re in the process of launching a second location in Oshawa, Ontario, which will feature seven functional bays and mirror the standards and excellence of our flagship shop.

Are you fully computerized? Are diagnostic skills strong at your facility?

Our shop is undergoing a complete digital transformation, embracing the latest in automotive technology to ensure every aspect of our operation is streamlined and efficient. We’re committed to staying ahead of the curve. That means ongoing training for our technicians, top-tier diagnostic capabilities, and an unwavering dedication to accuracy in every repair.

Do you do general repairs, or do you specialize in any area? Do you have diagnostic skills?

While we offer a full range of general automotive repairs, Babin’s has carved out a niche in fleet maintenance and management. In addition, we handle specialty work including classic car restorations, custom exhaust systems, and select heavy-duty truck repairs. Our advanced computer systems allow us to access real-time diagnostic data, service procedures, and repair charts, ensuring that every job is completed correctly and efficiently.

Why do you think you are successful in business?

What truly sets us apart is our customer-first philosophy. We pride ourselves on attention to detail and building strong, trust-based relationships with every client. Our business has grown primarily through word-of-mouth referrals—a testament to the quality of service and care we deliver. It’s not just about fixing vehicles; it’s about creating an experience tailored to each customer’s unique needs and expectations.

Transitioning from technician to business owner has been both challenging and rewarding. Developing a strong team and implementing the right systems has taken time and persistence, but those efforts have transformed the business and the people within it. Purchasing the shop during the pandemic forced me to quickly learn what it takes to run a successful operation—from optimizing car count and managing customer flow to refining our hours, marketing, and overall customer service.

One of the key partners in our success has been Carquest. Their TechNet program offers reliability in parts and service, allowing us to confidently stand behind every repair. Their consistent delivery times and willingness to go the extra mile ensure we can meet—and exceed—our customers’ expectations every time.

Ryan has a sound business philosophy, not to mention some advice for others in the business.

Advice to the Industry—To those entering or growing within the automotive repair industry:

For shop owners: Don’t be afraid to lean on others. Network with successful shop owners and hire a business coach to hold you accountable and help build a strong operational structure. It’s one of the most valuable investments you can make in your business.

For technicians: The industry is evolving rapidly. With a shortage of skilled technicians, there are more opportunities than ever—if you’re in the right shop. Join a garage that supports growth and development. Compensation is rising, and the future looks bright for those willing to adapt and learn.

At Babin’s Auto Repair, we are committed to continuous growth. Our aim is to expand into multiple locations while maintaining the same high standards of quality and service that got us here. As the aftermarket service landscape becomes more complex—with increasing costs of equipment and rapidly advancing technology—we know the key to survival and success lies in accurate diagnostics, exceptional service, and a relentless focus on quality.

The road ahead is challenging, but for shops that do things right, the opportunity for exponential growth has never been greater. At Babin’s, we’re ready to meet that future head-on.

This young man seems to have done all his homework, and the outcome is his successful business operation. Congratulations Ryan!
