Resets have never been easier.
Long known for pushing the innovation envelope, Hunter Engineering is revolutionizing the way ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) calibrations are performed. Their new Ultimate ADAS® system cuts setup times by up to 70%, while also taking much of the guesswork and room for error out of the equation.
Automotive techs no longer have to go through the arduous and time-consuming process of measuring out the exact spot where ADAS targets need to go. Instead, Ultimate ADAS® does all the hard work, calculates all the distances, and specifies exactly where all targets need to be..
Moreover, all procedures are documented step-by-step throughout the process, and can be sent automatically and securely to the cloud for future reference. “If anything were to ever go wrong with the vehicle in the future, the documentation proves that ADAS calibrations were performed correctly,” explains Ross Iacobellis, Field Development Manager for Hunter Canada.
He adds: “The documentation proves that the correct targets were used, that the vehicle was in the correct position and location, that the alignment was correct, and that all the systems were lined up properly.”
Designed for more than just ADAS calibrations, Ultimate ADAS® does double-duty as an alignment machine. “We took our full Hunter Hawkeye Elite® alignment machine and we made it into the Ultimate ADAS®,” Iacobellis explains. “So our customers are getting a two-for-one revenue stream. They can do alignments with the machine, and they can also do ADAS resets with it.”
Ultimate ADAS® is available with Hunter’s scan tool, ADASLink for an integrated process, or without, which means that Hunter’s customers can use their own scan tool.
Fool-proof technology
While resetting ADAS systems on vehicles can be a time-consuming and complex process, Hunter has managed to automate many of the steps involved, which not only speeds up setup times, but also eliminates human error.
For example, while ADAS resets are typically performed on a perfectly flat floor, Ultimate ADAS® employs 360-degree automated actuators that adjust the machine for the slope of the floor (up to four degrees).
“You don’t always find a perfectly flat floor in a shop,” Iacobellis adds, “so we’re proud of what we’ve been able to achieve with our levelling technology.”
ADAS resets can be performed on the alignment rack, he says, “because Ultimate ADAS® will automatically measure the vehicle in 3D space. So if the vehicle is 10 inches off the ground, the machine will automatically adjust itself to compensate. The technician doesn’t have to get involved.”
In short, shops that use Ultimate ADAS® no longer have to rely solely on the skills of their technicians to get ADAS calibrations right.
This advanced technology also saves time. For example, Iacobellis explains that with front-facing applications, technicians need between 0.7 to 1.5 hours of labour for equipment set up. “With Ultimate ADAS®, you’re up and running in 10 minutes,” he says. “And when it comes to target placement, the OEMs are typically content with plus or minus one millimetre. But Hunter’s goal is to get a bullseye every time.”
Originally launched in January, 2024 exclusively for Honda and Acura dealers, Ultimate ADAS® is now available for Nissan and Infiniti. “And by the time we show the machine at SEMA this year, we are sure to have many other OEMs on board with their stamp of approval,” Iacobellis concludes.
