The season brings several unique driving hazards that require heightened awareness behind the wheel.

Holman, a global automotive services leader, provides five tips to help drivers get ready for an autumnal driving season that presents several potential hazards that can compromise safety. Whether it is slick, leaf-covered roads, reduced visibility, or increased wildlife activity, the cooler fall weather brings with it various challenges that demand additional awareness while on the road. 

“As we head into autumn, drivers need to be mindful of potential road hazards that come with the change in seasons,” said Holman Senior Vice President of Service Operations Craig Neuber. “By knowing what to expect and how to adjust your driving habits, you’re able to safely enjoy all that this time of year has to offer.” 

The tips include: 

• Falling Leaves: An accumulation of falling leaves on wet roads increases the risk of hydroplaning. Falling leaves may also conceal potholes or other road hazards. Reduce speed, increase following distance, and avoid sudden manoeuvers on leaf-covered roads.  Regularly check tire and brake condition to ensure vehicle safety. Also avoid parking on leaf piles; heat from the vehicle’s engine or exhaust could spark a fire. 
• Sun Glare: During the fall, the sun sits lower in the sky, creating significant glare during sunrise and sunset. Keep a pair of polarized sunglasses on hand and clean your windshield regularly to minimize sun glare; reduce speed when necessary. 
• Foggy Mornings: The season’s warm afternoons and cool nights create ideal conditions for fog. Use low beams or fog lights to help improve visibility. Avoid using high beams as the light reflects off the fog, reducing visibility.  
• Wildlife Activity: Animals, especially deer, are more active during the fall as they search for mates. Avoid high-risk areas for wildlife activity when route planning. Remain vigilant in rural areas and use high beams to help spot animals.  
• School Traffic: School is back in session, increasing traffic around schools and residential areas. Slow down in school zones and neighbourhoods and be mindful of children who may be crossing the road. Always stop for busses that are loading or unloading. When possible, avoid these high-traffic areas during school hours.
