Jaguar’s new electric flagship signal’s a new era for the brand.

Jaguar recently unveiled the Type 01, an all-electric luxury grand touring car that marks a significant turning point for the brand. With a projected Canadian starting price of $178,000, more than 1,000 hp and a claimed range of up to 644 km, the four-door GT is the first production model of Jaguar’s new electric generation, and a critical test of its strategy to redefine itself in the premium automotive market.

Revealed in New York on Oct. 6, 2026, the Type 01 follows the polarizing Type 00 concept introduced in 2024. Its low roofline, long hood, sleek silhouette and broad proportions depart sharply from Jaguar’s recent production vehicles, signalling a new design direction intended to distinguish the brand in an increasingly competitive luxury market.

The company describes the Type 01 as its most powerful, aerodynamic and technologically advanced vehicle to date. Its styling also draws on Jaguar’s heritage, including the E-type and XJS, while attempting to establish a new identity for an all-electric era.

“From its dramatic design to its captivating drive, Type 01 distils the essence of Jaguar into a luxury grand tourer for a new era,” said Rawdon Glover, Managing Director of Jaguar during the unveiling of the new vehicle.

Glover added that the vehicle represents the foundation of a brand that makes no compromise between design and engineering in its pursuit of distinctive products.

Electric performance at a premium

The Type 01 is built on Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), a dedicated platform designed to accommodate the vehicle’s proportions, performance and occupant experience.

Its tri-motor powertrain delivers up to 1,030 PS, equivalent to approximately 1,016 hp, and 1,365 Nm (1,007 lb ft) of torque. Jaguar quotes a zero-to-100-km/h acceleration time of 3.2 seconds, putting the vehicle firmly in high-performance territory.

An 850-volt electrical architecture and a 118-kWh battery underpin the package. Jaguar estimates a range of up to 644 km with 21-inch wheels. Using a compatible 350-kW DC fast charger, the company says the vehicle can add up to 322 km of range in as little as 13 minutes.

Aerodynamics and packaging have also shaped the vehicle’s design. Active aerodynamic elements and carefully managed airflow contribute to a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23. The absence of a conventional rear window, replaced by a camera-based rear-view system Jaguar calls “ClearSight Rear View Display,” is another example of Jaguar prioritizing its design vision while adopting alternative technologies.

Repositioning the Jaguar brand

The Type 01 represents more than a new flagship. It is central to Jaguar’s effort to move further upmarket, targeting affluent buyers who value design, exclusivity and technology.

“We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before,” Glover said. “Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story. For me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the ‘1’, our first car for a new chapter, a ‘one of a kind!’”

That positioning will have implications for retailers. At a projected MSRP of $178,000 in Canada, the Type 01 enters a segment where customers will expect distinctive design, high levels of craftsmanship and a compelling ownership experience. Retailers will need to communicate not only the vehicle’s performance figures, but also its charging capabilities, real-world range and the value proposition behind its premium pricing.

Jaguar is also seeking to reinforce its new identity through cultural partnerships. At the New York premiere, the company announced actor Florence Pugh as its inaugural brand ambassador for the new era, reflecting its emphasis on originality, creativity and cultural influence.

The commercial test ahead

Orders for the Type 01 are expected to open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries anticipated in the second half of the year. Jaguar says the vehicle is designed, engineered and built in the United Kingdom.

Its success will depend on whether the brand’s dramatic repositioning translates into sustained demand. A distinctive design and impressive performance figures may attract attention, but the commercial challenge will be converting that interest into sales while delivering an ownership experience consistent with the vehicle’s price.

For Canadian automotive professionals, the Type 01 offers an early indication of how Jaguar intends to compete in the next phase of the luxury EV market. Rather than simply electrifying its established lineup, the company is attempting to redefine the brand.

The Type 01 is the first major production test of that strategy. Its reception will help determine whether Jaguar’s new direction can restore the brand’s commercial momentum while preserving the distinctive character that made it recognizable in the first place.
