BMW Unveils Next-Gen 2027 X5 and First-Ever All-Electric iX5 Platform

The exterior skin shifts toward the monolithic design language pioneered by BMW's Neue Klasse, highlighted by vertically aligned "Iconic Glow" kidney grilles, a taller front fascia, and high-gloss "Winglet" door handles integrated directly flush into the B- and C-pillars.
Defining the next technological lifecycle for its premium midsize luxury segment, BMW Has officially taken the wraps off the all-new, fifth-generation 2027 BMW X5. The redesigned Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) marks an industry milestone, launching with an unprecedented multi-energy ecosystem spanning mild-hybrid ICE, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), battery-electric (BEV), and future hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) configurations.

Battery-Electric iX5: 800V Powertrain and 460 kW DC Fast Charging
The structural headline for Canadian auto retailers and EV infrastructure specialists is the premiere of the BMW iX5 60 xDrive, the nameplate’s first pure battery-electric variant. Utilizing Gen6 BMW eDrive componentry, the vehicle incorporates an advanced module-free, cell-to-pack high-voltage battery architecture loaded with new 120-millimeter-high cylindrical lithium-ion cells. This pack framework fields a massive 144 kWh of net usable energy, yielding a preliminary EPA-validated range target of up to 700 km.
Backed by an 800-volt internal electrical grid, the iX5 shatters current charging standards by accepting an ultra-high DC fast-charging capacity of up to 460 kW. This enables a 10-to-80 percent state-of-charge replenishment in 22 minutes, or the ability to capture 170 miles of range in a 10-minute automated dump. Additionally, the iX5 standardizes bidirectional charging profiles including Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) pathways. Dual electric motors (EESM rear/ASM front) deliver a combined output of 570 horsepower and 593 lb-ft of torque, clocking a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.4 seconds.
Order Guides
For franchise dealer networks structuring upcoming customer allocations, the North American commercial rollout begins in phases:
-
October 2026 Launch: Market entry begins with the core X5 40 xDrive, powered by an updated 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine pushing 394 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque, integrated with a transmission-mounted 48V mild-hybrid starter generator. Base U.S.
-
Q1 2027 Deliveries: Arrival of the X5 50e xDrive PHEV (generating a combined 483 system horsepower, a 44-mile pure-electric range) and the flagship electric iX5 60 xDrive.
Inside the cabin, the layout undergoes a clean digital overhaul controlled by BMW Operating System X. Legacy analog clusters are deleted in favor of BMW Panoramic Vision, an advanced display interface projecting driver telematics across the entire base width of the windshield. This setup links seamlessly with a 17.9-inch free-cut Central Display and an optional 14.6-inch multi-touch Passenger Screen featuring driver-distraction shielding software. Dynamic performance profiles are routed through an in-house developed chassis central processing unit dubbed the “Heart of Joy,” which speeds traction management, lane-centering assist, and Level 2 autonomous hands-free Highway Assistant capabilities up to 135 km/h.
