To help Canada meet the urgent need for face masks for health care professionals and other Canadians, General Motors (GM) Canada is preparing parts of the Oshawa plant to produce face masks based on the GM production model already operating in Michigan.
The company plans to manufacture about one million masks per month at cost to the Canadian government with an estimated 50 employees supporting two shifts of production.
The project still requires the completion of additional work with the government and their Unifor partners. GM will provide updates as production begins.
“It is a proud day for all GM Canada employees to have the opportunity to prepare the Oshawa plant to manufacture millions of masks to help Canada address the VID-19 emergency. We look forward to working with the government and our union partners to make this happen quickly”.
