New data from Turo Canada shows that Canadians are increasingly turning to car sharing to get access to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).
Interest for ZEVs on Turo’s platform have soared in the past few years, with the number of trips taken in ZEVs increasing by an average of 131 percent per year between 2016 and 2020, demonstrating a growing trend toward sustainable vehicles.
Turo predicts that by 2025, ZEVs could make up more than 50 percent of the platform’s new listings, five times more than the federal government’s goal for new vehicle sales that same year.
The new data comes as Canada is making a strong push to increase domestic production of electric vehicles—coinciding with major investments from auto manufacturers and both provincial and federal governments—and rapidly expanding ZEV adoption rates. At the same time, the low domestic inventory of electric vehicles, compounded by their comparatively high cost, has made it challenging for Canadians to access these vehicles when they want them.
Turo recently partnered with the Quebec Electric Vehicle Association (AVEQ) to promote EV adoption. Any AVEQ member who lists their car on Turo is eligible to receive $250 after they earn their first $250 on the service. Hosting ZEVs on the platform also pays off for hosts across the country, as ZEV hosts earned on average $890 per month in Q3 of 2020.
Of all ZEVs on Turo, Tesla continues to dominate sharing interest.
