The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is encouraging automotive service professionals to pursue or maintain their Automobile Service Consultant (C1) Certification. The voluntary 50-question test evaluates core competencies in customer relations, shop operations, sales skills, internal communications, and general vehicle systems knowledge.
For Canadian auto repair shop owners, franchised dealer service managers, and fleet maintenance directors, front-counter expertise directly influences repair order conversion rates and shop productivity. According to ASE leadership, achieving C1 certification requires passing the exam alongside proof of two years of full-time experience dedicated specifically to service writing rather than hands-on mechanical repair.
To maintain active certified status, accredited consultants must undergo a streamlined recertification exam (C1R) every five years. Professionalizing service writing operations reduces diagnostic miscommunications between advisors and technicians, helping auto service facilities protect shop margins and enhance customer trust.
