Clutch pricing index tracks tightening EV inventories and expanding regional pricing growth

The national average selling price for a pre-owned vehicle climbed to $34,255, marking a 1.
Canadian pre-owned vehicle prices experienced a monthly rebound in May, recovering from a brief dip in April. The newly released monthly Used Car Pricing Report from online auto retailer Clutch attributes the upward trajectory to record-high consumer demand for SUVs and a substantial tightening of secondary market electric vehicle (EV) inventories, with British Columbia and Quebec leading the inventory declines.
The national average selling price for a pre-owned vehicle climbed to $34,255, marking a 1.3% month-over-month increase and a 2.9% gain year-over-year. Overall market sales velocity also accelerated, increasing 3.1% compared to April.
Key Report Benchmarks:
-
Record SUV Market Share: SUVs accounted for an unprecedented 62.9% share of all used vehicle transactions in May. This ongoing consumer migration away from compact segments and sedans continues to structurally elevate the national average vehicle invoice.
-
EV Inventory Constraints: Average used EV prices rose 7.3% month-over-month to $40,651. This price adjustment follows a 30.9% contraction in active used EV inventory since late February. High demand for sub-$35,000 EVs has depleted affordable stock, leaving a higher-priced remaining wholesale pool.
-
Regional Performance and Hybrids: Ontario led the country in localized price expansion, climbing 5.3% year-over-year. Meanwhile, hybrid affordability metrics improved, with 52% of pre-owned hybrids clearing below the $40,000 threshold. Conversely, affordable internal combustion engine (ICE) supply continued to contract.

For dealership procurement managers and remarketing operations, these data points underscore shifting seasonal acquisition priorities as lower-priced zero-emission inventory thins out heading into the summer months.
