Training is the Cure for Complexity
Nowadays, technologies are advancing so rapidly that introductory training in automotive mechanics is becoming increasingly incomplete. But how do we attract and retain the next generation of technicians in an automotive repair sector undergoing a complete technological transformation?
Continuous training is the key to success. Vocational diplomas (D.E.P.) in mechanics offer good basic training by condensing the modules as much as possible. However, updates roll out so quickly that this training rapidly becomes outdated. Whether dealing with internal combustion engines, electric motors, or increasingly complex transmissions, our trainers are faced with numerous challenges.
As someone with over 25 years in the automotive service industry, I like to stay informed about upcoming trends and future technologies, even those that never hit the market. Keeping up with the latest advancements currently being tested is crucial, as the next few years will be decisive for our trade.
In a way, we are automotive doctors, expert technicians dedicated to solving whatever issues come our way. Plus, as you know, customers today are highly informed and quick to turn to artificial intelligence for answers. But AI isn’t always a reliable source. It pulls from everything out there, accurate or not, and tends to provide pretty vague solutions.
This means misinformation can easily make its way to your customers. Your responsibility is to use your industry expertise to set the record straight, or to track down the right answers and pass that knowledge along. Customers place their trust in you and your crew. Make sure you invest the time to train your team so they stay ahead of the curve and are ready for any challenge. Happy diagnosing, everyone!
