A survey conducted by the Canadian International AutoShow has found that the majority of respondents are opposed to Canada phasing out sales of new gas-powered cars by 2035. This comes as the federal government signals possible changes to its electric-vehicle sales mandate are coming this winter.

A recent poll of 1,202 AutoShow Insider panellists found:

  • 68% of respondents oppose the proposed federal target for 100% zero-emission new light-duty car and passenger trucks sales by 2035.

When asked what type of vehicle they are most likely to purchase next:

  • 47% said a traditional gas option
  • 30% said a non plug-in hybrid
  • 11% said a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV)
  • 10% said a battery electric vehicle

These results indicate that consumer choice, across a range of powertrains and price points, remains a top priority for drivers. It is the basis for this year’s theme, Driven by Choice, which highlights the unprecedented variety of brands, technologies and experiences on display at the 2026 AutoShow.

Detailed survey results are available for download from the AutoShow’s media asset repository.
