The 2026 federal budget targets the automotive aftermarket by prioritizing technical trades, immigration reform, and tariff relief.

By targeting skilled trades retention and immigration processing, Ottawa’s latest fiscal roadmap directly lowers hiring costs and tax burdens for independent automotive repair shops.

The 2026 federal budget introduces several key measures directly affecting Canada’s automotive aftermarket, prioritising skilled labour development, immigration processing adjustments, and trade relief. For service centres facing persistent technician shortages, Ottawa confirmed a $10,000 employer apprenticeship grant scheduled for early next year, alongside a $5,000 Red Seal completion bonus launching on November 16, 2026.

To encourage recruitment into vehicle repair, starting in 2027 apprentice mechanics can fully deduct eligible tool expenses in a single year without income thresholds. In addition, Employment Insurance benefits for apprentices attending full-time technical training will increase from 14 to 18 weeks, reducing financial friction for shop technicians completing credentials.

To address operational hiring bottlenecks, the government committed $151.5 million over five years to reform the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, focusing on regional labour shortages and faster processing times. On cross-border supply chains, existing tariff relief continues, particularly for steel used in auto parts manufacturing.

However, AIA Canada notes that while the budget expands EV charging infrastructure, it omits dedicated measures for automotive right to repair and technician upskilling. While Ottawa plans broader consumer data access across telecommunications and aviation, independent repair businesses must continue advocating for a federal framework securing direct vehicle telematics, diagnostic tools, and software access.
