GM’s New Beast

Targeting market leadership in heavy-duty towing applications, GM confirms its 8.3-liter Duramax diesel engine for upcoming 2027 HD pickup lines.

General Motors has officially confirmed the development of its all-new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine, code-named “Mongoose,” destined for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD lineups. The manufacturer released a promotional campaign specifically referencing Ford’s competing PowerStroke V8 (code-named “Scorpion”), representing a 26 percent increase in engine displacement over GM’s current 6.6-liter platform. 

For commercial fleet directors, heavy-truck dealers, and fleet logistics managers, scaling displacement up to 8.3 liters provides a larger swept volume to enhance low-end torque while managing internal thermal stress under continuous heavy payloads. 

According to General Motors, the “Mongoose” Duramax mill will serve as the flagship powertrain for the refreshed 2027 2500HD and 3500HD truck series. While finalized horsepower, torque ratings, and maximum towing capacities remain unannounced, the powertrain represents GM’s largest truck engine displacement offering in two decades.
