Canadian Used Vehicle Sales Climb 8.8% Amid Broader GDP Rebound

Fresh platform analytics from Clutch, Canada's leading online used vehicle marketplace, demonstrate that while aggregate consumer demand remains elevated, Canadian buyers are tightening their purchasing parameters.
Coinciding with Statistics Canada’s fresh macroeconomic release showing a 0.5% GDP expansion in April and a 0.6% manufacturing recovery, the automotive retail sector is flashing distinct signals of consumer resilience.
Fresh platform analytics from Clutch, Canada’s leading online used vehicle marketplace, demonstrate that while aggregate consumer demand remains elevated, Canadian buyers are tightening their purchasing parameters.
The specialized Used Car Pricing Report highlights three core operational metrics shaping the domestic market:
-
Accelerating Transaction Volumes: Overall pre-owned vehicle sales registered an 8.8% year-over-year increase across Canada, outperforming historical seasonal averages.
-
Unprecedented SUV Market Share: Light trucks and SUVs captured a historic 62.9% share of all completed digital transactions—the single highest categorical concentration recorded in the platform’s history.
-
EV Supply Inversion: Used battery-electric vehicle (EV) inventory compressed by 30.9% since late February. This abrupt supply drain is actively checking previous price deprecations, driving average used EV asset values upward even though baseline EV acquisition costs remain roughly $4,750 CAD below last year’s historical peaks.
“Canadians are still buying vehicles despite ongoing economic and trade uncertainty, but they’re becoming increasingly selective about what they’re buying,” stated Dan Park, CEO of Clutch.
For Canadian dealer principals, wholesale buyers, and fleet managers calibrating secondary-market asset allocations for the second half of the year, this rapid contraction of pre-owned EV volume combined with near-total SUV dominance provides crucial data to structure trade-in appraisals and floor-plan pipeline acquisitions.
