Lubricant specialist LIQUI MOLY is rolling out a new digital test procedure to secure its product line and protect automotive professionals from the global threat of counterfeit oils. 

Starting in mid-May, the manufacturer began replacing its standard traceability codes with an optimized, non-copiable version featuring a distinct green frame, which is now equipped on all oil canister lids.

The new system allows shop owners, technicians, and parts distributors to verify the authenticity of the lubricant in real time using a smartphone scan. If the initial scan exposes any kind of inconsistency, the code is transferred to a dedicated authentication app for a secondary check. Upon identifying a counterfeit product, users are automatically directed to a contact form to report the item so that legal and corrective actions can be taken.

“Like all lubricant manufacturers, we are constantly faced with the worldwide threat of counterfeit products and we take legal action whenever possible. The quality of our oils makes them a popular target. Counterfeit products cause financial losses, undermine customers’ trust, as well as, in some cases, they lead to engine damage and can even put users’ health at risk,” explains Marco Esser in his role as Marketing Director at LIQUI MOLY. “We aim to take an active approach to this issue. The new, digital, real-time check intends to cut the number of counterfeit products as well as provide certainty for our business and private customers. Beyond fraud prevention, this next-generation QR code serves as a practical everyday tool for automotive service professionals. In addition to instantly validating the formula’s authenticity, the scan provides quick access to further technical data about the product and its proper vehicle applications.
