Chief Collision Technology has partnered with Burke Porter Group to develop an automated advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) calibration system—the new Mosaic Advanced Diagnostic Technology (ADT).

As explained by the company, by 2022, ADAS systems such as automatic emergency braking, lane departure and blind spot monitoring, will be commonly found in most vehicles by 2022. Therefore, the company has introduced the Mosaic ADT system to help its customers be ready to handle the future of collision repair.

“We want technicians to have the confidence to make accurate and error-free ADAS recalibrations through a comprehensive understanding of new vehicle technologies,” said Lee Daugherty, Vice President of Global Collision Sales for Chief Collision Technology. “As ADAS technology on vehicles is constantly changing, it was important for us when designing this product to partner with someone like the Burke Porter Group, which has spent the last 30 years developing this same technology that OEMs use for end-of-line calibrations.”

The equipment features advanced software that accesses OEM repair procedures and contains up-to-date information. This allows technicians to perform the repairs efficiently and correctly. Mosaic ADT can centre, square and position targets automatically. Additionally, it has been designed with the capability to sense the target that is hung and validate it against the OEM repair procedure, thus identifying whether the right target is being used. The risk of human error is minimized since measurements and adjustments are not done manually. According to the company, this ensures in better accuracy of calibration, reduced liability risk and shorter set-up-time.

Chief Collision Technology notes in a release that repair technicians need technological expertise and training to handle ADAS repairs on the complex vehicles of today.

“When ADAS systems are damaged, recalibration is a critical part of the repair process,” explained Daugherty. “That is why we require each technician using Mosaic ADT to go through specialized training and certification in order to operate the system because it is imperative for technicians to understand how to properly repair, recalibrate and test a vehicle before sending it back out on the road.”

To operate the system, a repair technician will have to drive the vehicle in front of it and plug it into the vehicle’s ODBII port. The technician then comes to know what ADAS features are present and whether there are any faults in the vehicle after it is analyzed by the scan tool.

The technician will be able to access the OEM repair procedures through Mosaic ADT, which also identifies the correct calibration targets. Target adjustments are done by the system itself. With the system positioned properly, an ASE-certified technician connects remotely to perform the calibration using an OEM scan tool.

Since the complete calibration process and repair history of the vehicle is documented by the system, technicians can store it electronically or provide it to the customer as proof that OEM repair procedures have been followed.
