Wakefield Canada has announced that Castrol is ready for the new API GF-6 specification.

As explained by the company, there has been plenty of ongoing speculation regarding the upcoming API GF-6 specification. As per the details that have been released, oil manufacturers will have to move fluids to the new API GF-6 specification from May 1, 2020 onwards.

A brand-new set of engine tests, hitherto not seen in the industry, are to accompany the new GF-6 specification. The API specification is also to be split into two categories, as per the new rules:

  • GF-6A—Applies to grades with viscosities 0W-20 and greater
  • GF-6B—Applies to grades with viscosities lower than 0W-20 (Grade 0W-16)

The transitional API SN+ is also being replaced by a new API “SP” specification, with the transition to GF-6. As explained by the company, the new GF-6 specification will now automatically provide coverage for the GF-5 SN+ protection against catastrophic engine failure associated with Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI).

Wakefield Canada states that all applicable automotive fluids from Castrol have already transitioned to the new GF-6 specification. The company intends to stay ahead of the game as the industry works to address the new changes. Castrol product labels will reflect the change from May 1, enabling customers to continue purchasing Castrol products with confidence.
