Automotive industry sector associations representing vehicle and replacement part manufacturers in the U.S, Canada and Mexico are calling for a renewed approach to the ongoing negotiations between these three countries as they try to modernise the current NAFTA agreement.

The Automobile Manufacturers Alliance, American Automotive Policy Council, Global Automakers Association, Asociación Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz, Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, Global Automakers of Canada, Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association, Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association of Canada and l’Industria Nacional de Autopartes A.C.have published the following joint statement :

“As a new government is being formed and will be in place in Mexico for December 1^st, 2018, we believe that now is the time for all parties to return to the negotiating table with a renewed commitment to the modernization of a cohesive three-country NAFTA agreement. This is a great opportunity to modernize this trade agreement. It is in the best interest of all three countries to refocus on establishing a new NAFTA agreement that will allow the North-American auto industry to remain globally competitive.”

The Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association has represented the majority of Canadian light and heavy vehicle manufacturers for over 90 years. Its membership includes Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Canada, Ford Motor Company of Canada and General Motors of Canada. Collectively, its members represent 60% of Canadian vehicle production, five vehicle manufacturing facilities, several engine and vehicle component manufacturers and over 1300 dealerships.
