Hyundai Motor and Aurora announced a new partnership that plans to bring autonomous vehicles to market by 2021.

The agreement will allow Hyundai to imbed the autonomous vehicle technology developed by Aurora into its vehicle platforms. While the initial launch will take place in selected pilot cities, the newly formed entity’s long-term vision is to commercialize their products across the globe.

The initial focus of the partnership is centred on the development of the hardware and software required to deliver Level 4 self-driving vehicles, which translates into a vehicle which is fully autonomous in certain conditions.

“We know for a fact that the future of transportation will be automated. In order to promote safe and flexible mobility, autonomous vehicles must be commercialized as quickly and safely as possible,” explains Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman, Dr. Woong Chul Yang. He believes that the partnership itself, as well as the technology it develops, will advance the mobility revolution.

Aurora CEO Dr. Chris Urmson believes that the Hyundai Motor partnership will help make autonomous vehicle technology accessible to the population at large.
