AIA Canada’s Appeal: Designate Automotive Aftermarket Businesses as Essential
AIA Canada explains that designating all automotive aftermarket industry businesses as Essential is necessary to keep all currently designated essential services and frontline workers mobile.

The Automotive Industries Association (AIA) of Canada has announced that it is requesting the Canadian government to designate all businesses in the automotive aftermarket industry to be designated as Essential Businesses.

AIA Canada explains that governments all around are mandating non-essential businesses to shut down to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Provincial and federal governments have had to take tough decisions regarding what constitutes essential and what does not.

The association notes that during this public health crisis, it is necessary to designate aftermarket supply chain businesses as Essential since they take care of the vehicle servicing needs of those involved in providing emergency services and transporting goods and people. This, states AIA Canada, will ensure the mobility of essential services workers, allowing the delivery of provisions, designated essential services, including fire and paramedic services to function as required.

Continuation of aftermarket industry businesses will keep the Canadian public and transportation system functioning safely and securely. Auto service shops will be able to function better in turn if they are able to receive parts and supplies through the aftermarket supply chain.

“AIA Canada’s top priority during this unprecedented crisis is to ensure that the aftermarket industry is equipped to play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of the Canadian public and transportation system,” said Jean-François Champagne, AIA Canada President.

The association adds that if aftermarket businesses are allowed to stay operational, the industry will need to work together to ensure the safety of workers and consumers by establishing emergency operation plans.

AIA Canada has also sent out messages to its members to share industry-specific information with its government relations so that the message can be conveyed to the government.
