Autonomous mobile robots could charge electric vehicles in the future.

Volkswagen has provided a glimpse into a future where Volkswagen Group Components’ mobile charging robots take over the task of charging electric vehicles.

These autonomous robots are designed to drive themselves to nearby electric vehicles within a parking garage, and charge the vehicles on their own without human help or intervention.

“The mobile charging robot will spark a revolution when it comes to charging in different parking facilities, such as multi-storey car parks, parking spaces and underground car parks because we bring the charging infrastructure to the car and not the other way around,” explained Mark Möller, Head of Development at Volkswagen Group Components. “With this, we are making almost every car park electric, without any complex individual infrastructural measures.”

The company says this idea is still a visionary prototype, which could one day be made into reality, “if the general conditions are right.”
