The 17th annual Uni-Select Ontario Charity Golf Tournament welcomed 120 golfers and a dozen volunteers to Lionhead Golf & Country Club in Mississauga, Ontario July 16.
The weather was perfect—a little hot and humid—but the predicted rain stayed away!
I believe everyone welcomed the coolness of the Club House and the dinner that awaited them after their game. The most remarkable moment of the evening was certainly when Uni-Select’s representatives Kam Sukhram, Marketing Manager, Central Division, and Jim Valsamos, Sales Team Leader, Central Division, presented to Barry Munro of Canadian Spinal Research Organization (CSRO) a cheque in the amount of $10,000. To date, this brings the Uni-Select total given to CSRO to $290,000.
Getting involved with CSRO all came about in 2002 because of a tragic accident. Jonathon DeHaas, son of Luc DeHaas of Warden Automotive went for a ride on his motorcycle. That ride turned into an accident and Jonathon became confined to a wheelchair as a result. Alan Dero, then General Manager of Uni-Select Ontario, got in touch with Luc and asked how the company could help. He was told that a donation would be a very thankful way of aiding the organization that was helping Jonathon—CSRO. And as they say, the rest is history. What Uni-Select Ontario has been doing for the past 17 years for the Canadian Spinal Research Organization in their goal of conquering paralysis is nothing short of extraordinary.
Pursuing a goal
In fact, Isabelle Courteau, Publisher, Rousseau Communication, who had entered the Uni-Select golf tournament and attended the dinner for the first time, was very impressed with what she saw at the event and said, “We think that what you have been doing for the last 17 years for the Canadian Spinal Research Organization is amazing and has inspired us to also support them in the pursuit of their goals.”
Barry Munro, as CDO of Canadian Spinal Research Organization (CSRO), was also presented with a plaque in recognition of 17 years of partnership with Uni-Select Ontario Division in their joint effort to conquer paralysis. Munro stated that people with injuries such as his usually had a lifespan of 30 years after their injury occurred… and Barry was celebrating his 30th year! But he also stated, “I am going to walk again!” And this could happen because of the technology, stem cell research and progress of today and what is happening at CSRO because of that. In much earlier years, this would not have been possible. But indeed, it takes organizations like Uni-Select to help make this new technology and research happen.
All in all… everyone went home a winner, and CSRO most of all!
