Traversing Tough Terrains

A closer look at some of the latest developments in Off-The-Road (OTR) tires this year.

Some OTR tires are created for adventurers through and through. Since they are not to meet smooth, perfect roads in their lifetimes, manufacturers design these specimens to combat the harshest terrains, while still giving a comfortable experience to the drivers.

Here are some of the latest trends in this segment:

In January this year, Mickey Thompson introduced its latest off-road tire— the Baja Pro X. Available only in size 43X14.50-17LT at present, additional sizes have been planned for the future.

The company asserts that the Baja Pro X model takes its proven off-road tires to new heights with exclusive attributes and durability not found anywhere else. The Baja Pro X includes the following features: a sticky compound, Pro-Tech Construction, Dual Decoupling Grooves, Treadbitter cleats, serrated tread regions, mud scoops, symmetric directional tread pattern, massive Sidebiters, and angled shoulder scallops.

“We designed the Baja Pro X for extreme outdoor use: rock bouncing, mud bogging, deep mud, rock, snow, sand, dirt, and gravel,” explained Jason Moulton, Senior Product Development Manager, Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels.

EFX launches the MotoHavok

In February, EFX Tires announced the launch of its new performance engineered tire, MotoHavok. The new tire is specially designed to traverse deep mud terrain. It features a combination of deep mud traction and a smooth hard-pack ride quality to navigate all kinds of off-road conditions.

The tire’s two-inch check bag lug tread pattern provides a smooth ride and enhances its self-cleaning capabilities. This six-ply tire also contains an ultra-deep wheel lip protector, which acts as an armour for custom wheels, shielding them from debris when in motion. The tread pattern helps in providing optimum traction in both drive and bias. The carcass in the tire is bulletproof.

Nexen Tire announced its partnership with True North Racing at the beginning of February. The tire company supplied its Roadian MTX Extreme Off-Road mud-terrain tires to its partner for the 2019 King of Hammers, which was held in Johnson Valley in February.

True North Racing of Western Canada selected two off-road-capable Jeep Grand Cherokee builds for the 4600 Stock Class. For the 4800 Legends Class, a custom-fabricated off-road ‘Brinkfab’ was the vehicle of choice. Nexen Tire’s Roadian MTX Extreme Off-Road tires were fitted to all three vehicles.

The company’s popular 35×12.5×17-inch and 37×12.5×17-inch off-road tires were used at the event.
