Les gouvernements du Canada et de l’Ontario accueillent favorablement un investissement d’Umicore Rechargeable Battery Materials Canada Inc. pour la construction d’une nouvelle usine de fabrication dans le canton de Loyalist.<\/strong><\/p>\n

L’installation fabriquera des mat\u00e9riaux actifs de cathode (CAM) et des mat\u00e9riaux actifs de cathode pr\u00e9curseurs (pCAM), des composants essentiels pour la production de batteries de v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques (V\u00c9).<\/p>\n

Projet en plusieurs \u00e9tapes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Le projet envisag\u00e9, dont le co\u00fbt total \u00e9ligible peut atteindre 2,761 milliards de dollars, devrait \u00eatre ex\u00e9cut\u00e9 en plusieurs \u00e9tapes. Umicore a annonc\u00e9 sa d\u00e9cision d’investissement ferme pour la premi\u00e8re phase de 2,1 milliards de dollars, dont 1,8 milliard de dollars de d\u00e9penses en capital, pour une capacit\u00e9 de production de mat\u00e9riaux de batteries de 35 GWh par an.<\/p>\n

Compte tenu de l’ampleur du projet envisag\u00e9, le gouvernement du Canada soutient le projet d’Umicore en investissant jusqu’\u00e0 551,3 millions de dollars, tandis que le gouvernement de l’Ontario investit jusqu’\u00e0 424,6 millions de dollars.<\/p>\n

Opportunit\u00e9s et potentiel<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Premi\u00e8re du genre en Am\u00e9rique du Nord, l’installation d’Umicore produira des CAM et pCAM \u00e0 grande \u00e9chelle industrielle pour les producteurs de V\u00c9 et de batteries au Canada et aux \u00c9tats-Unis. Au cours de la premi\u00e8re phase du projet, l’entreprise cr\u00e9era 600 nouveaux emplois directs, auxquels s’ajouteront 700 postes coop\u00e9ratifs pour les \u00e9tudiants, ce qui fera d’Umicore l’un des plus grands employeurs priv\u00e9s de l’est de l’Ontario. L’investissement d’Umicore renforcera la cha\u00eene d’approvisionnement de bout en bout des v\u00e9hicules \u00e9lectriques au Canada.<\/p>\n

L’ensemble du projet a le potentiel de produire suffisamment de mat\u00e9riaux de batterie pour soutenir la production de plus de 800 000 V\u00c9 par an, en utilisant des min\u00e9raux essentiels canadiens, notamment le nickel, le lithium et le cobalt, et en renfor\u00e7ant la cha\u00eene d’approvisionnement nationale du Canada et de l’Ontario en mati\u00e8re de V\u00c9 et l’\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me des batteries.<\/p>\n

Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l’abondance d’\u00e9nergie propre au Canada, l’installation sera presque neutre en carbone d\u00e8s le d\u00e9but de la production.<\/p>\n
