The IIHS has rated the Nissan Altima and Maxima.

The 2019 and 2020 Nissan Maxima were rated ‘superior’ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), while the 2019 and 2020 Nissan Altima were rated ‘advanced.’

Nissan is offering technologies like Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) with Pedestrian Detection on these models, which uses a combination of radar and camera-based technologies to track nearby vehicles and pedestrians. If a pedestrian is detected, visual and audible alerts are accompanied by automatic braking, helping to eliminate or significantly reduce the severity of an impact.

“The well-being of those inside our cars is just as important as the well-being of those outside our vehicles,” said Rob Warren, Director, and Chief Marketing Manager, Nissan North America.

The IIHS evaluation consists of three tests each at two speeds. The Maxima, according to Nissan, was the only tested vehicle to completely avoid the obstacle in all tests.
