New technology will harness the power of artificial intelligence.

Hyundai is working on a smart cruise control technology (SCC-ML) that combines the power of artificial intelligence (AI) within a vehicle’s Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).

“The new SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features,” said Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group. “Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving.”

SCC-ML learns the driver’s patterns and habits on its own, and then drives the vehicle in an “identical pattern as that of the driver,” Hyundai explains.

With SCC-ML, the front camera and radar constantly collect driving information and send it to the centralized computer. The computer then identifies the driver’s patterns, which can be categorized into three parts: distance from preceding vehicles, how quickly the vehicle accelerates, and how quickly it responds to driving conditions. Driving conditions and speeds are considered as well.

SCC-ML is planned for future Hyundai vehicles. Hyundai stresses that this technology is programmed specifically to avoid learning unsafe driving patterns.
