Commercial vans get into accidents when parking and reversing.

According to a recent study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in the UK, nine percent of serious commercial van accidents (in 2016) took place while the vehicles were either parking or reversing, resulting in over 1,300 injuries in that year alone to drivers, passengers, pedestrians or cyclists.

That figure does not include other accidents (when parking and reversing) which did not result in an injury, but which cost fleets in downtime and damages.

VW says parking cameras and front and rear sensors can reduce the chance or severity of accidents.

“The figures show how problematic parking and reversing can be for commercial vehicle drivers, especially for those who spend a lot of time negotiating tight spaces,” said Sarah Cox, Head of Marketing for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
