BASF Online Training

While most of the conversations at the BASF SEMA booth focused on the latest products, the new web-based eLearning platform also generated a buzz.

The digital platform includes an online training program for collision repair shops. The R-M Glasurit recertification courses were the first to be offered on the new platform. Technicians whose two-year certification is set to expire can sign up for the mandatory online courses and renew their certification immediately.

In addition to the online courses, individual technician profiles allow BASF to send reminders to those whose certification is set to expire. The automated system also recommends additional training courses such as colour-matching and overlapping repair time deductions.

The new BASF UV Grey primer, suitable for steel, galvanized steel and aluminum, was also among the products featured at the SEMA booth. Fully cured after 10 to 20 minutes under natural lighting conditions, drying times can be reduced to as little as 2 to 3 minutes using conventional UV lighting.

Best in Show

Close to 30 vehicles competed for the 2019 Glasurit Best Paint Award, which saw judges select a ‘32 Ford Sedan “5th Avenue Special” restored by Goolsby Customs as their overall favourite.

BASF collaborated with well-known designer and artist Chip Foose at this edition of SEMA to help them select the vehicle which best illustrates the brilliant colour and shine that people associate with the Glasurit line of paint products. The winning entry was chosen for showcasing perfection even in the finest details including, among other things, depth and tone of colour, striping and finish thickness.

“As a builder myself, I know how difficult it is to make a vehicle as beautiful as it can be,” explained Chip Foose. “We look closely at less obvious details that can escape the untrained eye: gaps, edges and various textures, to name a few. What set the 5thAvenue Special apart was the complexity of its multiple colours and the amount of work it took to line up the striping, align the gaps and ensure that the finish was flawless.”

Goolsby Customs selected Goolsby Edition Celadon Mist and Cumberland Green Glasurit line products for the winning project.
