PPG showcased its latest coatings developments for autonomous, connected, electric and shared vehicles at the 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) held at the Cobo Center in Detroit from January 14 to 27.
The new technologies featured by PPG at the event are as follows:
- Cathode coating for electric-vehicle batteries: This coating is designed to be a safe, cost-effective replacement for conventional cathode binders, which traditionally rely on the hazardous solvent N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). Additionally, the new binder helps increase battery life and reduces mixing times considerably.
- Visibility-enhancing coatings for autonomous driving: PPG is developing a new line of advanced coatings that facilitate autonomous vehicle sensor detection of other vehicles and oncoming obstacles. The new product line includes coatings that are designed to help LiDAR and radar systems detect dark-vehicle colors. It also includes easy-clean composite coatings, a product intended to help keep sensors and lenses clear in adverse operating and weather conditions.
- “Stackable” functional coatings for vehicle interiors: Designed to address the requirements of modern mobility, PPG’s functional coatings intend to enhance the look, feel, comfort and utility of interior surfaces, including touchscreens. These coatings feature an array of products such as transparent protective coatings, anti-fingerprint and anti-glare coatings, soft-touch paints and anti-reflective coatings. These PPG coatings can be combined into layered, “pre-stacked” solutions for easy application and reduced complexity.
- PPG ENVIROCRON Extreme Protection powder coating system–This dual-coat system by PPG is intended to be a significant development in corrosion- and chip-resistant coatings for high-tensile automotive coil springs. This system is based on a technology that uses reclaimable materials.
Besides its latest coatings technologies, PPG also presented its “We Are” color collection for automotive model years 2021 and beyond. The collection consists of four colour-stories that represent the latest global consumer trends.
