Bruce Eccles, owner of Eccles Auto Service, has announced that he is extending an invitation to people to smash a car for a cause.

As part of the shop’s open house on July 6, interested participants will get the opportunity to take three swings at a 2010 Kia with a sledgehammer by paying a $5.00 fee. The event will take place at the new Eccles Auto Service location, 123 Hatt St, Dundas, Ont., from 10 am to 3 pm. The collected money will be donated to the new Margaret’s Place Hospice at St. Joseph’s Villa.

Margaret’s Place plans to add 10 hospice beds to Dundas and a community outreach centre. This is to offer grief and bereavement support to patients and their families. St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation’s Gift of Love campaign goal included funds to support construction and the first few years of operations since only partial funding can be obtained from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Currently, hospice care is not available in the West Hamilton area.

Eccles has always been involved in raising funds and contributing to the community. Along with his team, he has been supporting several causes such as Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club, the skating rink in the park, minor hockey, and Dundas Real McCoys. Local churches and charities have already contributed $10,000 to Margaret’s Place.

Additionally, Eccles has lent his support to Routes Youth Centre, a local organization that helps young people between ages 8 and 19 years by providing a caring space to gather, a filling dinner, and educational and recreational programs. Ahead of the car smash event, Eccles is providing a unique recreational activity to the youths at the centre. He is allowing them to paint the Kia car bright pink. The paint and the supplies will be donated by Weeks Home Hardware Dundas. As a thank-you, Eccles plans to donate $100 to Routes after the car is painted.

“We’re grateful for Bruce’s ongoing support,” says John van Vliet, Chair of the Routes Youth Centre board of directors.  “It’s innovative events like this that characterize Dundas spirit.  Bruce’s event is a five-way win—the hospice gains much-needed funds, our community gets more hospice capacity, Routes youth get to volunteer, Routes Youth Centre gets a donation, and participants—well, they get to smash a car!”

Explaining his reason in bringing together a hospice fundraiser and youth from the Routes centre, Eccles says that, “We’re all vulnerable at points in our lives, but we’re most vulnerable in our youth and our old age.  How we treat our children and our elders says a lot about who we are as a society.”

Eccles has opted for a car smash instead of a traditional car wash because “It’s way more fun!”
